Ex-RAF Chipmunk Trainer Enstone Airfield

Book a Chipmunk experience out of Enstone Airfield! Fly for 30 45 or 60 glorious minutes in a genuine ex-RAF Chipmunk trainer at an ex-RAF airfield. Your flight will replicate those bygone days of aviation when the Chipmunk was the training aircraft for young air cadets.

Ever since being introduced into the Canadian and Royal Air Forces in 1946 the DHC-1 Chipmunk plane was always a hit with young pilots who were learning their first tricky moves in the sky. Some might affectionately call the Chipmunk ‘the poor man’s Spitfire’ referring to the fact that they handle almost as well. And indeed those who have flown Chipmunks agree that they are a beautifully balanced light and responsive aircraft.

Of the 13000 Chipmunks built there are around 500 airworthy examples in the world today. This fully-restored Chipmunk flies in her resplendent RAF trainer colours under the registration G-BXDI serial number WD373.

This Chipmunk’s first mission in 1952 was as an RAF trainer for the Nottingham University Air Squadron. Moving base to RAF Hurn (now Bournemouth Airport) WD373 gave many air cadets their first taste of flying for many years. Now she’s a civilian based at Enstone Airfield near Chipping Norton delighting all who fly in her.

For your aerial expedition you’ll be wearing a flying suit and a headset so you can communicate with your instructor pilot. Chipmunks have a tandem seating configuration so you will be sitting in the front seat with the amazing view over the propellor.

As the Enstone team says: ‘Our objective is to keep this icon gracing our skies for as many years to come and we want you to be a part of it’ so how could we refuse! We’re very proud to be able to offer these flights so that everyone can experience the Chipmunk at Enstone. Book your flight slot now and get ready for ‘chocks away’ in this much-loved vintage plane.
