The Robinson R22 is renowned for it’s reliability speed and low running costs. It has a single piston engine and the rotor blades span nearly eight metres. The helicopter has a range of 300 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 80 knots. 60 Minute Helicopter Lesson

Fly a helicopter for 60 minutes and you’ll find out that these sensation aerial experiences are a great way to discover the pleasure of flight as you’ve got the time to really get to grips with how these things actually fly and stay in the air – technically speaking you’ll be exploring the foundation flying manoeuvres such as hovering lifting off and eventually level flight all in a proper training helicopter.

Before climbing in the cockpit for your first foray into flying a helicopter there’s the all important air safety briefing. Listen carefully as once airborne after the take off it’s over to you to actually fly the two seater helicopter. Adjust the trim and control the rotor blades to gain altitude and there you go you’re flying! Isn’t it an amazing feeling?!

Helicopters are capable of cruising speeds as they fly that approach around 100mph can go backwards and even hover on the spot too making them one of the most exciting and thrilling ways to see the world below you from the air. No wonder humans have always wanted to fly. Helicopters are we reckon the most agile form of flight too and a total ‘must do’ for anyone who’s keen on aviation and even those who want to make their first steps towards formally starting helicopter flight training. With the instructor by your side at all times as you fly in these dual-controlled helicopters you learn lots during these trial lessons; from how to coordinate pitch and power using throttle and power changes to execute smooth banked turns and taking off vertically. We think the skills needed to fly a helicopter is a bit like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time – it’s all a question of control coordination and concentration.

30 Minute Helicopter Lessons

30 Minute Helicopter Lessons

Take your pick from a whole host of locations for these brilliant 30 minute helicopter rides! One of our most flexible vouchers it’s up to you where you decide to head to for your first foray into the wonderful world of rotary flight.

The airfields may vary but each experience starts in the same way – with a pre-flight safety briefing. Listen carefully as you may well hear your pilot instructor say the words “And this is the T-bar shaped stick that controls which way the chopper goes” – pretty essential stuff when it comes to riding in a helicopter!

Once you are comfortably strapped in the instructor will perform the last run of checks. As the rotor blades start spinning you will be struck how noisy it seems. If you’ve never been in a heli before your first take off is sure to be an eye opener as you slowly rise up vertically for a few metres then as you feel the chopper lean forward you accelerate off into forward flight.

After gaining cruising height and speed your pilot will introduce you to each of the three basic helicopter controls (including that all important cyclic we mentioned earlier!) demonstrating their use and effect and letting you try them for yourself.  Indeed your time in the helicopter isn’t just for enjoying the ride you will actual be at the controls too.

You will learn about pitching the nose of the helicopter up or down or rolling from left or right. You’ll grip what is known as the collective which you move up and down to make the helicopter do likewise and your feet will be on the rudder pedals controlling the direction in which the helicopter is pointing – there’s a lot to think about when it comes to handling a helicopter!

If there’s one thing you’ll be certain of after your ride it’ll be that helicopters are not easy to handle  but great fun to try especially with the reassuring presence of an experienced qualified instructor next to you. Of course they all have full dual controls to use when necessary and with patient instruction most people are soon able to achieve a degree of control within the period of a 30 minute ride.

20 Minute Helicopter Taster Flight

Get a taste of how it feels to fly a helicopter within just 20 minutes! Perfect for a short but very sweet way to have a go at learning to fly a two seater helicopter and experience the sensation of hover climbs and descents at locations across the UK.

Before you climb into the cabin there’ll be a pre-flight safety briefing and a short explanation of the controls. Once airborne and safely in level flight  it’s ‘over to you’ as you are handed the controls – just be careful what you do with all those pedals sticks and levers. Don’t worry too much as your instructor has dual-control!

In just 20 minutes you’ll get a good feel for rotary wing flying as you sit side by side with your instructor  he’ll show you what all the dials in the cockpit do and it’s a real thrill to hear them communicate with air traffic control too! Many who try these taster lessons at our helicopter flying schools will come back down earth wanting to learn more and practice those vertical take offs!
