You’ll hear how Windsor has been home to 39 monarchs and one in particular had a major influence on the interior design. Charles II wanted to rival his cousin Louis XIV who had a decadent decor at Versailles so when you’re visiting the State Apartments expect to see lots of gold leaf gilding fancy ceiling plaster work opulent furnishings and grandiose artwork too. And don’t forget these apartments are still used today by members of the royal family for events so you can just imagine the Queen sipping her cup of tea in one of Windsor Castle’s sumptuous drawing rooms.
One of the highlights for many is seeing Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House which happens to have been designed by famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and is one of the largest in the world. This world in miniature is just as impressive as the castle itself. You will also see the Gothic St George’s chapel and take a wander around the Precincts. All in all you’ll easily spend a good couple of hours at the castle before heading literally across the road for your Windsor teatime treat.
