Have a Go Day in Dorset

Have a Go Day in Dorset

When it comes to dinghy sailing there is lots to learn before you can be let loose on the water by yourself in a boat. That’s where this day course in Dorset comes in. It gives you an excellent introduction to what sailing a small dinghy vessel is all about – with lots of hands on time at the helm.

The training centre in Poole hosts hundreds of courses every year and has an excellent set up for total beginners which is why we’ve selected to offer the ‘Have A Go’ sailing day.

Based in the middle of one of the most stunning boating areas in the country it doesn’t get much better than this as you sail in one of the school’s dinghies around what is Europe’s largest natural harbour.

Thanks to the natural layout of the land these are some of the UK’s safest sailing waters and are ideal for getting to grips with a dinghy. This Poole-based school has a fleet of Wayfarer Pico and Laser dinghies to sail and for the uninitiated these boats are popular for both training and racing in.

All instructors are fully qualified and will spend time with you throughout your course so you learn and progress in your sailing. After mastering launching techniques the next test is to get sailing your dinghy in a straight line. With factors like the wind direction tides currents and other craft out on the water this is quite a nautical challenge for novices.

You’ll be given some excellent sailing tips such as keeping focused on a fixed point in the direction you want to go like a rock on the beach. Now you’ve got the basics you’ll continue to learn and progress out on the water throughout your full day of tuition.

Enough of our tips and hints the best way to discover dinghy sailing for yourself is to buy a voucher and get booked on to this full day session. Dates are offered from spring until the end of the autumn and everything you need is included in the price. All you have to do is turn up ready to learn your starboard from your port and get acquainted with wind directions and main sails.

Sunset Sailing

Sunset Sailing

Heading off for a spot of evening yacht sailing from Brighton Marina has to be one of the best ways to see the sights of Brighton beach. As you sail along daytime starts to fade and the sun sets on the Sussex coastline – all rather lovely.

These evening sailing experience are perfect for those who are not sure if they have the sea legs to handle a whole day of yachting or who can’t free themselves up so easily in the daytime. What we love about this location in Brighton is that a sunset yachting session can be the culmination of a fun-packed day out or the start of fabulous evening to come.

That’s because these yachts all sail from Brighton Marina – the largest in the country with up to 1600 berths for a huge range of sizes and types of boat to be moored in the inner and outer harbour. It’s a pretty vibrant place with wharf side restaurants bars cinema shopping and residential areas too so lots to see and do before or after your yachting.

Back out in the marina there are excellent facilities for yachtsmen and women and their boats with a lovely community feel amongst sailors. You also benefit from the really calm and sheltered waters behind those high quay walls so your shoreside safety briefing will be nice and serene. And that’s the whole point of going out on a yacht later in the afternoon. The waters on the sea are less choppy with fewer vessels out there so it’s all very chilled out and relaxed.

Onboard your professionally trained skipper will take charge of the yacht and there’ll always be plenty of space on the cockpit for you and your fellow passengers to kick back and gaze out across the sea at the Brighton seafront views and see the likes of Beachy Head and Seven Sisters as the sun wanes made all the more atmospheric with a glass of the sparkly stuff in your hand..

Or it could be that you want to get involved in your yacht sailing as soon as you leave Brighton harbour in which case you and your crew will ably assist the skipper with tasks such as hoisting sails and helming. These performance yachts are beautiful vessels that are a delight to navigate through the waters of the Sussex coastline whether you have previous sea-faring skills or not and made only more special by the fact that it’s as the sun is setting!
