Caterham in Oxfordshire

Caterham in Oxfordshire

If you have ever wondered what a Caterham 7 driving experience is like let us enlighten you on this legendary car before you decide whether or not to take it for a spin around this compact circuit in Oxfordshire.

Yes it has what can only be described as retro looks but that’s because the design is decades old but boy is it a good one (thanks to a Mr Colin Chapman) that has won many a motor race too. And yes it does only have 150bhp which is about the same as a decent SUV on the roads today. But there’s one very very significant difference. The weight. And that’s what makes the experience of driving a Caterham 7 what it is – thrilling.

It’s all about function over form with the Caterham 7. Forget your modern driving experience gubbins like ABS traction control air conditioning and even central locking this car is stripped down to the bar minimum. Even the seat belts are harnesses rather than inertia type to save weight. All this is why it feel almost exoskeletal with the exhaust running on the outside of the bodywork the front suspension is all exposed and even the bonnet hatches are too.

Inside the cockpit of the Caterham 7 it is we admit a ‘bit of a squeeze’ sort of driving experience. The pedals are close together and the seats are so low that you can barely see over the windscreen. The heat generated from this little pocket rocket’s brakes and transmission seems to seep into you and you feel every single bit of tarmac you drive over in the Caterham 7. Now that’s what we call a proper driver’s experience!

With your bottom just inches from the floor as you drive the Caterham 7 you’ll experience the sheer acceleration and the why the car corners and stops like nothing else you have ever driven – it really is driving by the seat of your pants round the track near Bicester in Oxfordshire. With unbelievable levels of agility and grip this is a real supercar slayer.

On this Caterham 7 driving experience from IntotheBlue you will enjoy driving for six thrilling laps of this one mile course. The circuit is designed to allow you to experience the acceleration cornering poise and outright speed of this motoring legend rather than endless braking and power off moments. The bonus of this airfield site is that only the cones get damaged if you overcook it or miss an apex rather than the unforgiving barriers at a race circuit.

Caterham Driving Experience

Caterham Driving Experience

Take a Caterham for a drive on the track and feel the power of British motoring! We are offering three-mile Blast and six-mile Thrill experiences at a race track near you with this nationwide track day operator.

The Caterham car company has been the custodian of legendary car creator Colin Chapman’s original Seven design since 1973. Caterham is as passionate about this car as those who own and drive them. Sold in kit form or built in the Dartford factory the Caterham 7 is a modern day classic with serious racing roots.

The aim today is still very much the same as when Colin Chapman said: ‘Simplify and then add lightness’. And when you drive this Caterham you’ll see that reducing weight and increasing power is what this car is all about and has always been about.

Sure amongst modern day supercars the Caterham certainly looks a lot different. The round bug-style headlights perched above the front axle the curved wheel arches the exposed exhaust running along the bottom of the doors and the famously open cockpit are just some of the things that distinguish the Seven. All that and not forgetting the fact that for years it held motoring records beating cars that are three or four times more expensive!

However you can forget about having room for the weekly shop or your golf clubs in a car with such a stripped back design. This open two seater uses every inch of space to keep it mega light with a curb weight of just 515kg so storage space is very limited. All this goes to ensure the Caterham simply drives like a dream with you just centimetres from the tarmac of the circuit.

These Caterham drives are available at various locations around the country with both the Blast and Thrill experiences offered. Get securely strapped in and get ready to take the track by storm in your super lightweight Seven. It’s going to be fast thrilling and fun thanks to Caterham’s ethos that ‘puts the driver at the heart of everything we do’.

Westfield Driving Experience

Westfield Driving Experience

On this thrilling Westfield experience you’ll be taking one nippy little sports roadster and driving it around a track! These Westfield driving experience days take place at various circuit venues so take your pick and get ready to take a Westfield Sport for a spin.

The Westfield is a true pocket rocket. It has the distinct advantage of being light. Very light in fact. Given their tubular space frame technology and glass fibre body they weight in at well under 600kg. This is nothing for a car and the reason why the Westfields drive so well.

Originally a personal project by Chris Smith he built his bespoke car in the garage of his home called Westfield House. The car gave more than a nod to Colin Chapman’s Lotus Seven design and everyone who saw Chris’s car loved it so he started building them for other people. Now it’s a well-established sports car company that’s 100% British-owned under the Potenza Sports Cars brand making over 400 hand-built cars every year.

For these Westfield experience days you’ll be driving a Westfield Sport. But this session isn’t just about the driving it’s about trying to tame this fierce little bundle of acceleration that makes it like no other performance car out there. Get it right and you’ll have the car entering and exiting the corners at the perfect speed on the perfect trajectory. And we have to admit when you do get it right it’s an awesome feeling!

Helping you hit the sweet spot in the Westfield will be the Lead Driving Consultant who’ll be conducting the pre-drive briefing. They’ll explain what driving the Westfield is like what the car is like your racing lines and what happens out on the circuit.

That’s the track-side theory done now it’s time to head to the track and put practice in motion. Race suit and helmet on jump in to the compact cockpit of the curvy Westfield Sport harness up and get ready to feel the power. And being just inches from the ground you will definitely be feeling every burst of acceleration.

The unparalleled performance of the Westfield is matched by quick and composed handling. You’ll need to have your wits about you to get this roadster lapping at a decent pace. But there’s no doubting you won’t forget your Westfield experience. Just such good proper grass-roots driving fun.

Lotus Exige Drive

Lotus Exige Drive

Get ready to meet the Lotus Exige on this experience! The Exige is the Lotus you’ll most want to buy. It’s as simple and straight-forward as that. It’s raw yet actually pretty practical for a sportscar and it drives like a dream. This Lotus Exige drive will let you discover just what a delight this car is.

The Lotus Exige V6 350 is an improved version of the already brilliant Exige S. Every body panel and part of the Exige has been examined to ensure it is as high-performing and light-weight as possible. And all that scrutinising means even more kilos have been whittled away leaving this Exige weighing in at just 1125kg. No wonder the Lotus Exige drives so fast for a car that has a fairly middling (in supercar terms) 345bhp.

And as you will find out on your drive this Lotus Exige really does shift. We have just one word for you – torque. The very first gear shift you experience in this Exige will be memorable for sure. And not just because of the acceleration you’ll be feeling. The actual gearshift on the manual Exige is a sheer joy – it’s all exposed (saving weight again!) and it’s like something from a robotic sci-fi movie. Utterly mesmerising.

You’ll need to keep you eyes firmly on the track though during your Lotus Exige drive. Before you know it you’ll be reaching 60mph (the clock stops at 3.7 seconds for that one) and the rev counter will be bouncing towards 7000rpm. The first corner you take will show you how well-balanced this car is with it’s low centre of gravity. You feel like you’re just on the edge of understeer but then the car grips and away you go.

With what the motoring journos call ‘keen throttle response’ the Exige is the perfect partner for you on the track. It gives as much back as you put in so you can either go for a cruise or really push this car and it reacts favourably to both. We think you will love this mid-engined specimen of British-built automotive engineering. What’s more you don’t see many Exiges on the roads and even fewer of them of the track so this Lotus Exige experience will be right up your street.
