Learn to how to handle a powerful 90hp RIB at high and low speeds on this course based at Brighton Marina. When you’ve completed this RYA powerboat level 1 and 2 course you automatically qualify for the International Certificate of Competence. And that could be your licence to ride the ocean waves and inland waterways if you own a boat  or decide to hire one in the UK or abroad!

The two-day course begins with manoeuvring the RIB in and around the Brighton Marina area to get a feel for the boat its layout and controls. With up to two other cadets and the instructor you’ll then head out into the Channel for an afternoon of high-speed boat handling as well as learning procedures such as how to recover a man overboard. Next comes some theory including passage planning by piloting the RIB to Shoreham-by-Sea along the coast from Brighton.

On the second day you will do high-speed navigation and handling tuition based around finding yellow racing buoys at sea. The instructor will also take you up the River Adur to practice boat handling and mooring in strong tidal conditions. The course finishes with a lap of honour to demonstrate your new skills.

Over the two days you’ll learn all about boating – from the adrenaline of high speed manoeuvres to the satisfaction of bring the boat into a tricky mooring. The school operates both sports boats with inboard engine and RIBs with outboards and you’ll be taught by fully qualified RYA instructors who will show you just how fast and agile these powerboats can be.

The RIB or rigid-inflatable boat has a rigid hull topped by sturdy inflatable tubes to give an exciting and stable ride. Even if you haven’t got your own fancy speedboat this course is great fun and gives you all the basic teaching you need to be captain and commander of your own launch.

These two-day Level 1 & 2 RYA Powerboating courses are a great opportunity to have fun learning the basic seamanship skills you need to handle a powerboat safely – and at the same time to gain a useful qualification from the Royal Yachting Association. 

Courses take place in the sheltered waters of Poole Harbour in Dorset. It’s one of Europe’s finest harbours offering a perfect environment for an introduction to the art of driving a powerful boat and an ideal place to build up confidence.

Day one and you embark on Level 1 of the power boating course where you’ll learn how to control a powerboat in some of the most common situations faced by mariners. Following a boat safety briefing you go aboard for instruction covering several basic manoeuvres such as coming alongside picking up buoys mooring and “man overboard” procedure. You will practice each of these several times to ensure you are comfortable and confident.

In the afternoon the lessons continue out on the water with training on general seamanship including awareness of other boat users and the International Regulation for Prevention of Collisions at Sea. You’ll learn how to predict tides and their effect on your speed and course. There’s also work on weather conditions and how they affect the handling of your craft as well as ropework including tying knots. 

The next day it’s back to the marina for your second day of training. You will be going more in-depth into power boating learning more advanced manoeuvres and driving the powerboat at higher speeds. All these elements are essential parts of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 curriculum. It includes a final practical assessment in which you will be required to perform each of the manoeuvres learned during the course in order to obtain the International Certificate of Competence as well as the RYA Levels 1 & 2 qualification.

All the RYA qualified instructors are experienced professionals and know how to introduce their students to safe and enjoyable boat driving. The marina is in a superb location near to Poole and offers the ideal training ground for you to hone your powerboat driving skills with loads of hands on boat time too as the vast majority of tuition is done whilst out on the water.

Book a powerboat experience in Southampton and go racing over the waves! It’s not everyday you can drive an offshore racing powerboat so these shared and solo experiences are an absolute must for adrenaline seekers who want to speed across the seas out of the marina at Southampton in Hampshire.

he powerful boat is the real deal. They actually competing in the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Championship (HF4S) so you will be able to feel the acceleration and grace of one of these highly responsive racing speedboats just like the professional racing crew. Capable of powering through almost any water conditions at a high rate of knots you may find the boat spends almost as much time out of the water as it does in it!

To really get into the flow of things you’ll be kitted out in proper HF4S team kit and safety gear including life jacket. Your instructor/driver will more than likely be a current or past powerboat racer so be prepared to hold on tight when the throttle is unleashed as they will be more than capable and keen to show just what these Honda vessels are capable of. Once launched you’ll set off at a gentle cruising pace along the river to the Solent estuary. When you are out on the open waters the speed restrictions are lifted and you’re off wave jumping and pulling super tight corners.

Keep your sea legs because after your demo session it’s your turn to have a go at actually piloting these simply rip-roaringly power-hungry craft. If your skipper moves are up to scratch you may well have the opportunity to test your skills on an offshore racing circuit cutting through and flying above waves at a hair raising speeds.

On the shared powerboat experiences out of Southampton you get around 15 minutes of drive time and as the boat holds up to four passengers when you’re not driving you’ll be in the back seat with the wind and sea-spray in your hair! If you book a voucher for four you will have the boat exclusively for your group for the duration of the experience. If you go for the solo you get to hog the whole boat for a whole hour out on the water – just you boat and instructor.
