Cinematic Journeys: UK Films That Showcase Britain’s Breathtaking Landscapes

Ah, the UK! It’s a place brimming with stunning vistas and charming nooks that have lured filmmakers for decades. When you think about it, there’s a reason films from these isles look so darn picturesque—our nature’s throwing some serious camera-ready shapes. Let’s take a little stroll through memorable UK films that flaunt Britain’s beauty, nudging you to hop on a train (or bus, or, dare I suggest, a bicycle) to experience it for yourself.

The Rolling Hills of the Lake District in “The Hunt for the Wilderpeople”

Ever watched The Hunt for the Wilderpeople? If you haven’t, go on, I’ll wait—oh, alright, not too long! This New Zealand gem ventures into the wild, but don’t forget that its heart is inspired by the natural beauty found right here in Britain—especially in our very own Lake District.

Imagine this: you’re hiking through a riot of greens and blues, with fells reaching up to meet the clouds. You might even spot a cheeky sheep trying to sneak away with your picnic sandwich—trust me, I’ve experienced this firsthand. The Lakes boast a landscape that flickers between tranquil lakes like Windermere and jagged hillsides that’ll make you feel as small as an ant on a giant’s foot.

If you’re feeling adventurous, I recommend tackling the Catbells hike. It’s a brisk outing, but at the top, you’ll feel like you own the world—or at least, the view! Plus, you can marvel at the very hills that probably inspired a few scenes of Wilderpeople.

The Jaw-Dropping Scottish Highlands in “Harry Potter”

Alright, let’s not kid ourselves—every Potterhead out there would agree this franchise has enchanted a whole generation. But did you know the magical Hogwarts Express ran on real tracks? Yep, take a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train for that iconic route over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The Scottish Highlands are breathtaking, with mountains that loom like majestic guardians over a patchwork of lochs. When I was up there, I got lost on a mid-sized hill (don’t ask how; I was following what I thought was a deer—I may have been mistaken) and stumbled upon a wee bothy, which is basically a pub without the booze. There was nothing but a half-broken sign and a lovely old chap who offered me bad tea and even worse biscuits. I embarrassingly admit I drank them—craving caffeine can lead to some poor decisions!

While you’re there, keep an eye out for the stunning landscapes that appeared in Harry Potter. The misty mountains and sparkling lochs around you have made even the most untidy hairdos appear magical.

The Incredible Coasts of Cornwall in “Poldark”

Now, if you’ve got a soft spot for drama (and who hasn’t), Poldark is your ticket. This series showcases the enchanting cliffs and golden sandy beaches of Cornwall like they’re covered in glitter. I can’t say I’ve twirled like Ross Poldark on those cliffs, but let me tell you, the view from the top of the cliffs at Tintagel Castle is something else.

Next time you’re in Cornwall, do grab a Cornish pasty—preferably while sitting at the edge of one of those cliffs, taking in the salty sea breeze. Just keep a tight grip on it. I can assure you, pasties do have a talent for flying away due to unsuspected gusts of wind.

And don’t forget to explore the artistic vibe of St Ives. It’s not only gorgeous, but you’ll also admire local artists capturing that stunning seafront—all of that wild sea crashing against the rocks can make one feel quite poetic.

The Distinctive Deserts of Dartmoor in “The Hound of the Baskervilles”

Now, let’s dial it back to the eerie side of nature. Dartmoor, with its mysterious moors and misty tors, sets the perfect scene for The Hound of the Baskervilles. Nothing gets the spine tingling quite like wandering across those moors—especially when the clouds roll in low, and you swear you can hear some other-worldly howl.

Imagine thick fog, granite tors jutting out oddly, and enough legends of ghosts and hounds to keep you on your toes. I once went exploring here and encountered a rather grumpy cow, vehemently asserting its claim over the path. That was my cue to humbly retreat with a newfound respect for bovine territory.

For those into quaint towns, head to Widecombe-in-the-Moor for cream tea that’ll knock your socks off (just watch out for the scones—they’re deceptively filling!).

The Picturesque Isle of Skye in “The Secret of Roan Inish”

Feeling a tad more on the personal side? The Secret of Roan Inish shot some scenes in the stunning Isle of Skye, which feels like a slice of dreamland. Cliffs of Old Man of Storr to the striking colours at the Fairy Pools—everywhere you look, nature’s not putting on a show; it’s talking to you.

When I visited, I attempted to walk to the Fairy Pools. Let’s just say my sense of direction can be a bit… shall we say, improvisational? I ended up chatting with a lovely old lady who was knitting something that looked painfully complicated. She told me tales about how the pools would sparkle at sunset—best believe I rushed over at the right time, but promptly forgot my camera. Face palm. So when you go, don’t be like me—snap away.

An Invitation to Explore
