Sandy Shores to Seaside Strolls: The Best UK Beaches You Need to Visit

Sure! Let’s hit the sandy shores and stroll along those seaside gems of the UK. Grab a cuppa and settle in. Here’s my cheeky take on the best beaches you simply must visit.

Sandy Shores to Seaside Strolls: The Best UK Beaches You Need to Visit

Ah, the seaside. There’s something about it, isn’t there? The sound of waves crashing, the smell of salt in the air, and the wind tugging playfully at your hair. Whether you’re a sunbather, a sandcastle architect, or just someone who enjoys the occasional bag of fish and chips, UK beaches have got something for everyone. From the rugged beauty of Cornwall to the charming shores of Norfolk, I’ve got a few pure gems to share from my travels. And trust me; I’ve had my fair share of sandy mishaps along the way!

1. Porthcurno, Cornwall

Let’s kick things off with Porthcurno, a little slice of paradise tucked away in Cornwall. Seriously, if you’re a pirate, you’d choose this as your treasure spot. With its turquoise waters and stunning cliffs, it’s hard to believe you’re still in the UK.

When I visited, I practically skipped down to the beach. Sunbathing? Check. Snorkelling? Check. Watching a seagull steal my pasty? Total check! Lesson learned—never underestimate a hungry seagull. They might look cute, but they’ve got ninja reflexes.

Take a moment to wander over to the nearby Minack Theatre. It’s perched on the cliffside, and I can assure you, it hosts some of the most breathtaking theatrical performances against a backdrop that could make anyone weep. Just a heads-up though—bring a light jacket because once the sun dips, it gets chillier than your ex’s heart.

2. Woolacombe Beach, Devon

This place is a personal fave, and it’s got the surf to prove it! Woolacombe is known for its sprawling sands and lively waves. You can easily spend a whole day paddleboarding, surfing, or just splashing about like a toddler who’s been given a lifetime supply of ice cream.

The problem? My surfing skills are about as impressive as a cat trying to swim. I spent more time flailing in the water than actually standing up on the board. But hey, at least the locals got a good laugh from it! I mean, who doesn’t enjoy watching a floundering fish?

If you fancy a change of scenery, head up to the grassy hills behind the beach. You’ll find some stunning views and the occasional cow who looks like it’s judging your choice of swimwear. Woolacombe also hosts a few cheeky beach bars where you can grab some much-needed hydration—or a cheeky cider.

3. Scarborough Beach, Yorkshire

Scarborough is like your quirky aunt who always has unexpected surprises. It’s got two beaches—one is a sandy haven, perfect for the kids to build sandcastles (or for adults to take naps). The other, steeped in history, is a pebble beach that reminds you to wear shoes because those stones can be a right nuisance.

I went there during the Scarborough Fair, and let me tell you, it was a sensory overload—in a good way! I tried to beat my record at the ring toss and promptly failed spectacularly. Honestly, I could’ve sworn those stall owners were in on a conspiracy to take my money, one ring at a time. If you’d like a proper dose of nostalgia, check out the Scarborough Spa, famous for its Victorian architecture.

And if you’re after food that won’t break the bank, the local fish and chip shops are a must. There’s something about devouring your chips while looking out over the sea that just feels right, doesn’t it? Just be careful of that seagull!

4. Bournemouth Beach, Dorset

Bournemouth has got a posh vibe going on, and it shows. White cliffs, golden sands, and a pier that looks like something straight out of a postcard. You’ll definitely want to stroll along the promenade (camels and donkeys are totally optional – it’s just for flair!).

On my last visit, I decided to channel my inner beach volleyball player. Spoiler alert: my hand-eye coordination wasn’t exactly Olympic standard. I tripped, fell over, and knocked over a sunbather’s beach umbrella. Classic. The sunbather looked more amused than offended. Thankfully, we laughed it off over a ridiculously oversized ice cream cone afterward. Good way to make friends, right?

Bournemouth also hosts a buzzing nightlife. If you’re feeling cheeky, pop into one of the fabulous beach bars. The locals are friendly, and they’ll probably give you the inside scoop on where to have the best cocktails. Just don’t ask for anything too wild at 4 PM—you might get side-eyed.

5. Brighton Beach, Sussex

Ah, Brighton. It’s like the cool kid in school, always ready to throw a party. There’s always something going on. You can spend the afternoon lounging on the pebbles, but don’t forget to stroll down the famous Brighton Pier.

Once upon a time, while rolling along the pier, I had the unfortunate fate of trying one of the ‘world-famous’ Brighton doughnuts. Spoiler alert: they were more about style than substance. I’m pretty sure biting into one was the exact moment I lost the ability to speak (and possibly some dignity).

But, Brighton’s vibrant arts scene calls me back time and again. Keep an eye out for street performers—some are absolute treasures! And be sure to visit The Lanes, where the hidden shops ranging from vintage treasures to quirky gifts will keep you entertained and certainly wandering into places you might not expect!

6. Cromer Beach, Norfolk

Last but not least, Cromer Beach, known for its delicious crabs and the amusingly eccentric Cromer Pier. The beach here has a laid-back feel—as if it knows it’s charming and doesn’t need to shout about it.

Grab yourself a crab sandwich from a local kiosk. You won’t regret it! A word of warning though: I’ve had a few dodgy cups of tea here. I mean, how can you mess that up? It’s supposed to be the nectar of the gods!

Take a wander up the pier and admire the stunning sunset—pure bliss, my friends. Keep an eye out for the locals clam digging; it’s quite the sight—there’s some serious competition going on. Who knew hunting for clams could be so intense?

Conclusion

So there you have it! From Porthcurno’s gorgeous blue waters to Cromer’s charming vibes, the UK offers some incredible beaches for your next adventure. They’re perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or just discovering what quirky snacks you can find. You might just come home with a sunburn, a tale of a rogue seagull, and a newfound fondness for beach towns.
