Often, when a pub closes down — at least in London — it will reopen as a hairdresser or a kebab shop. It’s a refreshing change then when one reopens again as a boozer, and it’s almost a miracle when one returns with a vision and style as clear as Camberwell’s The Bear.
This top-tier pint pourer has exploded onto the Camberwell scene in the first half of 2023 in what feels like a breath of fresh innovation and all-around vibe deliverance in the south London neighbourhood. Just a few doors down from the also recently opened Dash The Henge record store, these two businesses have added to the already excellent vibe of Camberwell.
With minimalist decor, The Bear’s clean walls and carefully curated artwork create a smooth blend between traditional pub and forward-facing, design-led spot for the stylish pubgoer in 2023.
Owners Teddy Roberts and Joe Sherratt said they wanted to give Bear a “New York atmosphere,” having secured a late license for it, and with a strong selection of wines and spirits and a good number of seats both inside and on the street its simple beer selection is easily forgiven.
So, if you find yourself in Camberwell, time is well spent by checking out The Bear, the neighbourhood’s newest old bar that already feels like a key part of Camberwell’s fabric.
