A Babymoon at The Pig Near Bath

A Babymoon at The Pig Near Bath

Before I had Oscar, my friend Theresa and I were always off on adventures abroad visiting Fjords in Norway, beaches in Jersey, sangria in Barcelona and eating Schnitzel in Vienna! We decided to do final staycation in the UK as we did before Oscar was born – something much more sedate than our usual wine-fuelled nights! I’m a huge fan of The Pig Hotels, having visited three already, and Theresa was keen to try her first! As she lives in Bristol and I’m in London, The Pig Near Bath is the perfect middle ground for us.

What are The Pig Hotels

There are currently eight hotels in The Pig group (with another two coming soon!), the first hotel was The Pig in the New Forest and the subsequent hotels followed a similar concept. The hotels are all set in a converted country house and have a similar food focussed vibe, shabby chic interior and focus on sustainability but every hotel has a slightly different character! All the hotel’s are small and describe themselves as ‘a restaurant with rooms’ as the food takes centre stage with ’25 mile menu’ of locally sourced ingredients many of which are straight from the hotel’s kitchen garden.

Having been to The Pig, The Pig on the Beach and The Pig at Bridge Place, I was keen to try The Pig nr Bath which was actually the third Pig to open. The hotel has 29 rooms and is set in the Mendip Hills in a Deer Park, the Pig Near Bath was only a 1 hour twenty mins from London, perfect for a one night get away.

Our Room and The Interior at The Pig Near Bath

As I mentioned, The Pig Near Bath is set in a gorgeous converted country house…

There are several lounge areas plus a bar and restaurant, all in the Pig’s signature rustic style. Previously a family home, some of the design has been repurposed and chandeliers have been kept and even some family photos on the wall! There’s plenty of sofas to sink into, fireplaces to lounge beside, books to read and board games to play. Perfect for pure relaxation.

Something I love about The Pig hotels in that you can get self-contained cottage style accommodation that doesn’t cost the earth! There are rooms ranging in size and price in the main house or you can choose one of the two stand alone rooms, The Apple Store or The Hide. I opted to book The Hide which is right in the middle of the Kitchen Garden with a view of the Deer Park!

Here’s our cosy cottage for two!

Downstairs is the sumptuous bedroom with four poster bed, log fire, Nespresso machine and a mini larder.

The pantry contained plenty of comfort food, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks… even mini marshmallows.

I will say, though this is a standalone cottage, it is still rather cosy and if you are thinking of bringing a baby you may struggle to fit a cot in here. Cots are free of charge at The Pig Hotels but you do need to check in advance if they can be accommodated. While children are welcomed at all The Pig Hotels, the best family accommodation is found at The Pig in the New Forest, The Pig at Combe and the Pig at Bridge Place.

Upstair in The Hide features a gorgeous bath room  with a roll top bath.

The shower is huge and I could have spent hours enjoying the monsoon shower head.

Experiences and Activities

The Pig Hotels are bijoux beauties and with that said there’s not much to do in the way of activities. For this reason the hotel may not be suited to children who need lots of activities as there’s no pool, kids club or sporting activities. However, it’s only a 20 minute drive to the city of Bath where is plenty to see and do. Personally, I think the hotel is more suited to families with babies or with very young children who don’t need lots of activities or keep it adults only.

There is no spa but the hotel has two ‘Potting Sheds’ and can offer massages, facials and pregnancy massages.

Otherwise Theresa and I just had a walk around the grounds and admired the deer park…

`
And enjoyed a coffee on the lawn. After that we literally sat on the bed for about three hours chatting and scrolling our phones which felt like a luxury as I was exhausted from pregnancy and looking after a three year old while she was happy to have a break from her events business.

Food

Food is the main event at The Pig. The Kitchen Garden is the main driver here and the menu can change at the last minute depending on what’s available. All other ingredients are seasonal and local and The Pig operates a 25 mile menu with a close relationship to local suppliers. As well as the standard menu (served at lunch and dinner),  there is a wood fired oven delivering the most delicious flatbread!

Don’t miss breakfast at The Pig, a beautifully curated farm table of homemade granola, yogurt, pastries, charcuterie and more. Plus sourdough toast and boil your own eggs! There’s also a menu of hot food from which you can order the usual classics.

For lunch we had some really delicious nibbles of meatballs and mozzarella along with a flatbread pizza each. For dinner I could only manage a main course (damn my reduced capacity at the moment!) my choice of lemon sole was a little heavy on the capers and I had to ask for a fresh one as it was too salty but Theresa loved her monkfish and afterwards we enjoyed ice cream in one of the lounges.

Final Thoughts

I love The Pig Hotels and they are absolutely perfect to get away from it all and live in a bucolic bubble! The Pig near Bath is not ideal for children as there’s not a huge amount to do and rooms are quite cosy to share but it does work well for babies and toddlers.
