Most Affordable Times to Visit 10 Of The Priciest Destinations In 2018—Based Off Holiday Rental Rates | The Real Britain Company

Looking for a luxury getaway at an affordable price? At Holiday Lettings, we’ve rounded up 10 of the priciest destinations around the world and identified the most affordable (and alternatively, most expensive) times to visit this year—based off the median weekly holiday rental rates in these destinations.

According to a TripAdvisor survey (Holiday Lettings is a TripAdvisor company), 64% of travellers plan to stay in a holiday rental in 2018. Meaning booking in advance is your best bet to secure a deal, and you could save thousands.

For the second consecutive year, the last week in December tends to be the most expensive time to travel. If you’re set on a post-holiday getaway, book well in advance to find a home that suits your needs and fits within your budget. If your dates are flexible, travelling in November or January can yield significant savings. For example: in Ka’anapali, Hawaii, travellers can save 38% by travelling in mid-November rather than the end of December.

Maximizing your budget can also make it possible to book a longer break. Travellers heading to St. Bart’s can book a two-week stay in October for nearly £200 less than the cost of a one-week stay in January.

Destination Most Affordable Time Median Weekly Rate, Most Affordable Time Peak Travel Time Median Weekly Rate, Peak Time % Savings, Most Affordable Vs. Most Expensive Week
Dubai, United Arab Emirates Second week in February £1,775 Third week in January £4,228 58%
St. Barts, Caribbean Second two weeks in October £4,130 First week in January £8,463 52%
Avalon, California (Catalina Island) January and February £1,337 Second week in July £2,480 46%
Wailea, Hawaii September £2,086 Last week in December £3,589 42%
Ka’anapali, Hawaii Second week in November £2,549 Last week in December £4,145 39%
Aspen, Colorado Second week in October £2,014 Last week in December £3,197 37%
Beaver Creek, Colorado Mid- May £3,422 Last week in December £5,325 36%
St. Martin/St. Maarten August and September £1,797 Last week in December £2,681 33%
St. James Parish, Barbados Second week in June £1,621 Third week in December £2,263 28%
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Second week in October £2,742 Last week in December £3,785 28%
Santorini, Greece Second week in November £2,245 Third week in August £3,007 25%

Travellers can find additional rental savings beyond the nightly rates. Here are a few bonus savings tips:

  • Split the cost: Choose a multi-bedroom home and get your friends and family together. Split among the group, the nightly rate becomes affordable, and many of these holiday lets include luxe amenities, like beach access, private pools, and indoor movie theaters. These properties can cost thousands per week, but when you divide up the cost, rates can fall in the $20-30 range per person per night.
  • Get cooking: In a survey by TripAdvisor (Holiday Lettings’ parent company), travellers named a full kitchen as the must have rental amenity, outranking laundry facilities, a pool, and even WiFi. Book a holiday home with a kitchen for additional savings. Preparing even one meal a day on break can significantly cut dining costs, and free up your funds for local experiences.
  • Check the amenities: Pack light and skip checked baggage fees by picking a rental with a washer and dryer and look closely at the property notes—some rental prices include bonuses like free parking, airport transfers and welcome meals.

Methodology: Median weekly rates are based on 2018 pricing for all two bedroom rentals in each destination.
