Andy’s Taverna – Greek feast

When I was much younger I went on holiday to the Greek island of Naxos. Although I cannot remember much in detail I can still recall the excitement of sitting at a taverna by the harbour as fishermen brought in baskets of swordfish and squid. I remember the delicious taste of chips dunked in fresh tzatziki and I remember falling in love with seafood.

I was a pescetarian back then but ever since I mistook a chicken goujon for a fish finger during my first year at secondary school I have been a fully-fledged carnivore.

When I first visited Andy’s Taverna I chose to try out one of the meat dishes that my dad had always raved about: Lamb Kleftiko. When the dish arrived I looked at the plate in shock. It seemed as though there had been a mistake and they had put all the orders in the entire restaurant onto one plate. Sensing that I was feeling overwhelmed the affable waiter smiled at me and offered some support: “we call the Kleftiko the dee-no-sour”. I wondered whether I had been served a brontosaurus or a diplodocus.

I needn’t have worried though. The succulent baked lamb was delightfully flavoured with garlic, rosemary and oregano and the accompanying roast potatoes were perfect for soaking up the herby juices. I didn’t manage to finish it but the leftovers made for a lovely lunch the next day.

Great value, impeccable service and delicious food; a stolen slice of Greece in Camden Town.
