Happiness Forgets – A hidden oasis

A few years ago Hoxton was simply the best place to go out in London. It was a thriving, bustling area full of interesting pubs, bars and clubs, but unfortunately now Friday and Saturday night in Hoxton is much more like a night in the West End with stag and hen parties littering the pavements.

Thankfully, though, there are still a few good places to be found, and one of the best is the hidden basement bar Happiness Forgets.

I really like Happiness Forgets. It’s full of friendly, interesting people. It’s small and needs to be ‘discovered’ compared to what else is open close by, but trust me, it’s worth it (clue: look for the stairs going down…).

There is a ‘no wallies’ door policy (the phrase is ‘great cocktails, no wallies’). The music is good (no DJs – there is not enough room for them!) and the bottled beers include a favourite of mine; Meantime Pale Ale. The truly excellent wine list has been curated by nearby wine bar Sager & Wilde.

The cocktails themselves are very good (good enough to have been voted one of the best 25 bars in Europe by Cocktail Spirits) but it is small (it can maybe hold 50 people!) and can get very busy but that hasn’t stopped it being hailed as one of the 50 best bars in the world!? I’m not so sure about that, but I can say it is easily one of the best bars in Hoxton.
