London has many faces – it can be busy and chaotic but it can also be quaint and charming. Hampstead is probably one of the most charming areas of London that still has this village feel and wandering around its quiet alleys feels like stepping into history.
While walking around Hampstead is an activity worth doing in its own right, there’s a truly magical place tucked away in Hampstead Heath which I love returning to. The Hill Garden and Pergola is a beautiful garden in the heart of Hampstead Heath. This peaceful oasis offers stunning views of the city skyline and a tranquil atmosphere. The Pergola was built in the early 1900s and was originally part of a grand Edwardian mansion. The mansion was later demolished, but the Pergola and gardens remain as a testament to the beauty and elegance of that era.
Today, the gardens and pergola are open to the public and are a great spot for a walk or a peaceful afternoon with a good book in hand while lying on the grass. The Pergola is covered in climbing plants and provides shade on hot summer days which makes it a great escape from one of those heat waves we’ve been having in recent years.
One of the highlights of the gardens is the wisteria tunnel, which is in full bloom in the spring and early summer so I definitely recommend a visit if you’re in London around that time.
